SafeTREC is offering free Complete Streets Safety Assessments (CSSA) to California local agencies with a population of over 25,000 people. CSSAs are comprehensive transportation safety assessments that focus on pedestrian and bicycle safety. They help local agencies identify and implement traffic safety solutions that lead to improved safety for all users of California’s roadways.

7 separate projects address crucial traffic safety issues for the safety of road users in California.

(Berkeley, Calif., December 20, 2019) – The UC Berkeley Safe Transportation Research and Education Center (SafeTREC) announced today 7 grants for 2019-20 from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to support crucial traffic safety programs.

SafeTREC researchers, faculty, staff and graduate students are excited to participate in the upcoming Transportation Research Board 99th Annual Meeting from January 12-16, 2020 in Washington, D.C. This year they are expecting to have more than 13,000 transportation professionals attending from around the world. A number of sessions and workshops will focus on the spotlight theme for the 2020 meeting: A Century of Progress: Foundation for the Future.

The Safe Transportation Research and Education Center (SafeTREC), a program of the UC Berkeley School of Public Health, is a center involving academics, governmental officials, and community-based organizations in California. With sponsored funding, the Center’s objective is to prevent injuries from traffic collisions through projects encompassing research, training, public service, and/or policy. UC Berkeley SafeTREC is excited to release the California Speeding and Aggressive Driving Study 2019 led by Ewald & Wasserman Research Consultants (E&W). This study was conducted on behalf of the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and the Safe Transportation Research and Education Center (SafeTREC) at the University of California, Berkeley.

The Community Pedestrian Bicycle Safety Training (CPBST) program trains and mobilizes communities to address pedestrian and bicycle safety and strengthens collaboration with local officials and agency staff. As part of our education and professional development activities for the Collaborative Sciences Center for Road Safety (CSCRS), we're excited to announce the recipients of our 2019 CSCRS Road Safety Graduate Student Fellowships for this fall semester! This year's five awardees were from three different academic departments and submitted excellent applications for a wide range of student-initiated research projects.

Safety and women’s perceptions of safety is a prevalent factor affecting the gender gap of cycling within the US. In a recent study by UC Berkeley researchers, the use of bike lanes in the South of Market Area of San Francisco found that only 29% of the cyclists were female despite accounting for 50% of the population in the area. A new research brief by UC Berkeley SafeTREC's policy and program analyst Dorry Funaki summarizes key issues found in this study of women’s perceptions of safety when cycling.
